Heading Up North
Maggie and I went up North along with a friend of ours, Peter. We drove up N-NW to Al Zubara on the old Al Zubara road where there are the remains of old civilizations and a restored Fort. The area was where early "Qataris" settled as fishermen and is even mentioned in Ancient Greek literature.

Here is the Fort from the parking area. |
Like most places, there is little established protocol or practices |
DSCF0003.JPG ...so a guy changing a tire nearby yelled to a shack and out came an old man who spoke no English to serve as our guide! |
...he also had keys to the place. There are actually layers of different settlements that were found here. |
Here is the inner courtyard. |
There is a small museaum-type area displaying old pottery, coins, buttons, and other such implements. |

The Fort well. |
This shot is taken from the opposite battlement. |
From on the battlements, one can see the Gulf Clearly. Keep in mind this is the North Coast so it is where Qatar "sticks out" deep into the Gulf and so it was strategic. |
Through fighting slots for arrows, bolts, rifles, or whatever. The Qatari military had an outpost here up to the early 80's. |

It was about 45C or so (113F) but actually under the palm fronds on the carpet was refreshing. |
One of the customs is not to show the soles of ones feet. Peter and I were twisting our legs the entire time :-) |
Here are Peter and Maggie with our Guide on the far right. |

Next we headed off on a REAL BAD ROAD along the coast to Algamel. This is an old abandoned village that has been declared National Archaelogical Site- M25 |
It appeared to be rather recent and modern-Post 1900 when abandoned. It is strange since it is modern but Qatari Culture has made great strides in the past century. |
