This is the fireworks finishing and then the last day or two.
We went out to a place called The Palace of Holyroodhouse. This is the active residence of The Queen when she is in Scottland and is a current royal residence. Security relected that fact! The place is awesome and is definitely the other MUST SEE LOCATION for those visiting Edinburgh. I must say, the Queen is not slumming when in Scottland as this place has the best of everything!
We learned a lot about the history of Scottland when up there and found it quite interesting. I did not realize how little I knew about Scottish history. We also went to the Scotch Whiskey Heritage Center and became members of the society... free tasting you know! We learned the differences in Scotch from the various regions. They really are VERY different. The tour while very expensive, is well worth it and includes several short movies, history lectures, tasting, and a "ride" through history. It is VERY professional and highly recommended. YOU find the society on the "Royal Mile" right down from the castle. A bit farther down you can find good places to eat (pubs and such) and it is also near to the Edinburgh Old Town Weaving Company where they make tartan kilts, sweaters, gloves, scarves, etc. The center you can see in photos 26-27-28. This is a huge multi-story weaving mill and kinda historical display with old looms and demonstrations of how the work is done. There are many people about here and they can help you from finding the perfect sweater to matching your family heritage (pattern) when searching for a kilt!
Scottland is a place Maggie and I will definitely be returning to as soon as possible, preferrably in the summer as I want to climb Ben Nevis which is in the west highlands south-southwest of Inverness. Maggie and I really want to wander the highlands and see Inverness, Fort William, and the Lochs in-between. God willing, we will be able to squeeze it in this spring or fall.
